Insurance Basics: Everything You Need to Know

How To Prevent Car Break-Ins During The Holiday Season

If your car is broken into, you may be forced to file an auto insurance claim with your auto insurance company. While you cannot prevent every car break-in, there are steps you can take to help minimize your risk. During the holiday season, thieves may be looking to break into your car and steal your packages, as well as anything else in your car. Here are a few tips to help minimize the risk of your car being broken into this holiday season.

Hide Your Valuables

One of the best ways to minimize the risk of your car being broken into is to hide your valuables. This includes things like shopping bags, change or dollar bills in your console, sunglasses or even items like phone chargers and music equipment. If thieves see items in your car, they are more inclined to break in. But if there is nothing in plain sight, they may not want to target your car. It is easy to place your valuables in your car, but before you leave your car to go shopping this holiday season, make sure everything is hidden.

Park In a Well Lit Area

Another way to minimize the risk of a car break-in this holiday season is to park in a well-lit area. Thieves do not want to run the risk of being caught. As such, they look for cars that are parked in dark area or along the edges of the parking lot. If you park in a well lit, high traffic area, there is more risk that the thief will get caught, so they may not target your car.

Ensure Your Car is Locked

The last tip may seem like it is the most obvious, but when you are in a hurry to get in and shop, locking your car may slip your mind. Before you leave your car to go complete your holiday shopping, take the time to ensure your windows are rolled all the way up and that your car is locked. Take the time to check the doors on your car before walking away. Unlocked doors make it easy for a thief to gain access to your car, so don't make it easy on them.

If your car is broken into, your auto insurance rate may increase. Take the time to follow these simple steps to help decrease the chances of your car being broken into and help keep your car insurance rates as low as possible.
